This week’s meeting was a particularly busy and engaging evening for our club. We were pleased to welcome visitors Sue Foley and Dennis Tarrant, alongside Leonie Brasier, Marg Gallagher, and our District Governor, Peter Shephard. The club also received apologies from Ben Hill, Gary Frank, Mary Preston, Kylie Rowbottom, Jenny Sanderson, and John Pearce, who were unable to attend.
Certificate of Appreciation and Myanmar (Burma) Earthquake Donation
During the meeting, G.P. presented the club with a certificate of appreciation recognising our recent donation towards earthquake relief efforts in Myanmar (Burma). GP detailed the positive impact that our contribution will have but also shared some of the challenges faced in ensuring the funds reached those most in need. Alison encountered significant difficulties in doing this however she succeeded in the end.
Board Approvals for International Projects
John Jones provided an update from the Board, announcing the approval of $500.00 payments for two vital projects. The first aims to deliver clean water, sanitation, and hope to more than 6,000 students in rural Cambodia. The second will help fund a school toilet project in Nepal, supporting improved hygiene and educational outcomes for local students.
Quiz Winners
Congratulations go to John Jones and Geoff Adcock, who emerged as the winners of the evening’s quiz.
District Governor’s Address
District Governor Peter Shephard delivered a passionate and inspiring address to the club. He shared his introduction to Rotary in Altona and reflected on his early career. Peter encouraged members to invite friends and acquaintances who are passionate about important causes to join Rotary, emphasising that the organisation strives to support these individuals. He noted that age should never be a barrier to joining and expressed a desire to rebuild Rotaract.
Peter also spoke about a newly formed satellite club, predominantly comprising former police and emergency services personnel. This club is dedicated to supporting youth and other community initiatives. He reported that, since COVID, club membership numbers have experienced a modest increase.
Highlighting the importance of supporting the Rotary Foundation, Peter reminded everyone that all donations go directly to where they are most needed. He also announced that October is Polio Month within Rotary and encouraged everyone to contribute to fundraising for this crucial cause.
Peter informed members that the next District Conference will be held in Horsham from 27th to 29th March next year. This event will bring together three districts—9800, 9510, and 9780—demonstrating the true spirit of collaboration. With accommodation filling up quickly, members are encouraged to book early, and there is the option to bring your caravan.
Club Activities
Looking ahead, next week’s meeting will feature a visit to the “Oscar 1 Mine Rescue” (details are available in this bulletin). Additionally, the club is preparing for the upcoming “Walk in the Whipstick” event, which aims to support efforts towards polio eradication.
