August 13th, 2025

It’s great to see such a strong turnout tonight at the Mechanics Institute for our August
meeting.

Apologies this week were from Karen Armstrong, Brian Fitzpatrick, Ben Hill, Rita O’Brien,
Mary Preston, Kylie Rowbottom, Jenny Sanderson, Eric Smith and GP.

Service & Community - The BBQ we were going to be cooking at the Eaglehawk Secondary
College this Friday has been cancelled.

We have one more football gate to man for the year being Saturday week on the 23 August 2025. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Rotary members that have helped with this over the Year.

Youth Engagement - Lyn reported that that we have a number of students from Eaglehawk
Secondary College who have expressed interest in National Youth Science Forum.

Thank you to Mary and Larrie Preston, Geoff Gallagher and Sophie Costello who helped
supervise the students with the Science And Engineering Challenge.

Geoff gave us a report on Peter Cox’s Funeral, Peter was a Past President and Paul Harris
Recipient for the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk.

“Things start to happen when people sit down to discuss issues in their lives and together
decide to take action for a better life for everyone, I thank all those in my life who have
done just that.” – Peter Cox  6/9/1948 – 31/07/2025

Tonight’s quiz was a lot harder and after 4 tiebreakers we still didn’t have a clear winner so
we moved on.

Guest speaker tonight was Geoff Adcock reporting on his attendance at the International
Rotary Convention in Calgary Canada.  Geoff was very impressed with Geena Davis, American Actor and Author Writing Children’s Books and a strong advocate for Girls Rights.

Next week's meeting is transferred to Saturday 23rd August as we with the Rotary Club of Bendigo to celebrate 100 Years of Rotary in Bendigo.

VALE PP Peter Cox OAM PHF
Rotarians, partners and families of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk extend our sincere condolences to the family of PP Peter Cox OAM PHF on his passing.

Peter is recognised for his wonderful contributions to our club, serving as Club President during 2006-2007 and his work throughout the community was testament to his dedication to the Rotary moto 'Service Above Self'.

Rotary Book Shop
A call has gone out for some additional assistance at the book shop.  Current trading days are Wednesday 10am-1pm and Saturday 10am-12noon.  Discussions are also taking place as to the future operating days/hours (including a possible 'Book Fair'), so an idea of who else would be available to assist would be great in the forward planning.  The Rotary book shop is a wonderful example of how Rotary works within the community, and in this case, is leading the way with the recycling of perfectly good books that don't need to be ending up in landfill.

The overflowing stock of books are currently a book lovers delight, so help us to spread the word - come and check out the massive selection of books on offer - you are sure to find what you have been looking for, in fact, you'll also find what you haven't been looking for too!

Mechanics Meeting Room
Great news from the City of Greater Bendigo this week has seen one of the two air conditioning units in the meeting room replaced.  Some time ago we were advised that the replacement of the units would occur sometime over the next couple of years.  However, a call from the Property Department last week advised that they would be able to replace one of the units now and would schedule the replacement of the 2nd unit in time for next winter.  This is a great outcome as it means that the works are to be undertaken at no cost to the club.

100 Years of Rotary in Bendigo
Club members have responded positively to the opportunity to share in the celebrations with the Rotary Club of Bendigo, therefore our meeting on the 20th August is transferred to Saturday the 23rd August when our club will meet with and join the RC Bendigo in celebrating 100 Years of Rotary in Bendigo.

Saturday 23rd August will be witness to a major Rotary event in Bendigo.  The Rotary Club of Bendigo celebrate 100 years since they were chartered and the celebrations on this day will be in the form of a Gala Dinner.  Our club are proud of our connection with the Bendigo Rotary club as they were our sponsoring club back in 1966 when we were chartered.  So, not only is this a celebration for the Bendigo Club but it is in fact a celebration for all rotary clubs in Bendigo as this is a significant milestone for us as well.  100 years of Rotary in Bendigo - that is quite an achievement and one to be celebrated.
