22nd January 2025

Welcome to our club bulletin, produced and distributed to keep our club members and our local community up to date with club activities.  For information about our club simply go to www.eaglehawkrotary.org.au for more stories and links.

Our first dinner meeting for 2025 was perfectly timed to fine tune the planning for the Australia Day Breakfast - Rotarians are needed from 7.30am onwards, with breakfast being served from 8.30am.  Official proceedings to commence at 9am with support from Eaglehawk Citizens Brass Band, Eaglehawk Fire Brigade, local Scouts and the local Karen Community.  Our thanks to all those involved in the morning and a special mention to the Phoenix FM team for once again providing an outside broadcast live from the event.

Plans are progressing for the Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet, see details later in the bulletin.

I confirm that our meeting next week will be a dinner meeting at the Borough Club, where we have a booking for dinner at 6.30pm - with two huge commitments both this weekend and next it will be an opportunity to simply gather, relax and recharge for the next BBQ!  Carmel will need to know numbers so please let her know if you are attending and if you are bringing someone so as she can book for us.

Many thanks to those who took the boxes of books home from the Mechanics after our meeting - its true what they say, 'many hands make light work'.

President Alison
Charismatic Teacher, Musician, and Mentor Named Eaglehawk’s Top Citizen for 2025

Albert Skipper, commonly known as Skip, will be honoured as the Eaglehawk Citizen of the Year during a culturally diverse and inclusive Australia Day celebration next Sunday, 26 January.  In announcing this distinction, Alison Bacon, President of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk, stated that Skip has an impressive history of contributing to the community by teaching English and music to thousands of toddlers and children over many years.

"Skip is truly exceptional, having made a significant and positive impact on Eaglehawk through his musical talents, skateboarding skills, and ownership of Skip’s Skateboard Shop on Sailors Gully Road.  "His professional and voluntary commitments, coupled with his personal qualities, have enabled him to create a central hub in Eaglehawk for social connection, which is invaluable for mental health and community cohesion,” said Alison.

Youth News

Our Bendigo students have been attending NYSF over the January holidays. It was great to hear from some of our BSSC students from Brisbane. See their email and photo below.

The quarterly cluster youth meeting will be held in February so will keep you posted with the minutes later.  There is a lot to discuss with so many amazing youth programs in which Rotary is involved.

Free Community Breakfast in Canterbury Park.
This annual event gets the year off to a cracking start, free BBQ breakfast from 8.30am followed by the presentation of the Citizen of the Year Award.  A performance by the local Karen Community is an amazing spectacle of colour and movement - not to be missed.

Phoenix FM - 106.7

Have always been a great supporter of our club, especially with our annual Australia Day Event in the form of an outside live broadcast.  2025 will again see them on deck with live interviews and great coverage of our free community breakfast.  Phoenix FM are celebrating the official opening (by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon Jacinta Allan) of their digital studio on Wednesday 29th January.  Use the link below for additional information.
Catering for the CFA Championships
We head down to the RF Turner Fire Track at Lake Weeroona on Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd February for our annual commitment to catering for the local CFA Demo.  Always a great event and a pleasure for our club to be involved.  PP Eric Smith will be co-ordinating the volunteers roster for the two day event so please let him know your availability.

Camp Getaway Working Bee

Ken Maxfield advised the club in December that there would be a working bee for a cleanup at Camp Getaway on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd February.  Ken has now contacted the club seeking confirmation of the numbers from our club that will be attending.  I have responded to Ken that it is unfortunate that it coincides with our clubs annual catering commitment to the CFA.
