November 12th, 2025

We had a good turnout despite apologies from Karen Armstrong, Mick Costello, Ron Payne, Kylie Rowbottom, Tim Watts, Gary Frank and Jenny Sanderson.

Out guest speaker was Tim Caldwell who was with us a few weeks prior with his daughter Harriet, Tim spoke of how he was working in Bendigo with a security firm, then transferred to Cairns where he met up with one of the world’s best casino managers.  He headed off to Israel to work with this manager in a new casino called the Oasis which was located near Jerrico in Palestine.  This casino was the first major cross-border development project involving Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.  Tim spoke of his time living in Israel and working in Palestine.  And what a time he had, he told us of Arabian shepherds who respected Australians from stories passed down from the First World War.  (The Australian Light Horse charge at Beersheba).  Australians were regarded as honourable people, but it was advised not to fight with them as they were regarded as mad.  He also told us that he was treated as a celebrity in his role as security operations manager.  Tim said there was a lot of cheating and passing over of counterfeit money and of the huge bets some Israelis would make sometimes $250,000 US dollars at a time.  There was Russian Mafia money lenders present at the casino and many stories of corruption and violence.  The casino closed in 2000 whilst Tim was back in Australia.  A very interesting talk but it didn’t make me want to go there.

We have lots happening in the next few weeks.
  • Trailer Christmas raffle,
  • Swap meet car parking,
  • Eaglehawk Children’s festival.
  • Catering for Fire Brigades Championships.
  • Along with requests for help at the Honda Energy Breakthrough at Maryborough (see
  • attached)
  • And a request for assistance from the Salvation Army to pack gift packs for prisoners on Wed 26th November between 10 and 12, followed by lunch. Karen told us there is over 1000 packs to be done.
  • If anyone is available to attend the Dahlia and Arts sub-committee meeting next week on Monday 17th Nov at 7pm at the old Courthouse to discuss the festival.  It would be good to support this long running event.
I will be away for 10 days, and Alison will step into my shoes next week. Thanks Alison.

Geoff Gallagher.

Your help is valued - and needed!
Secretary John has emailed members with reminders as to the upcoming club commitments and our need to fill some rosters.

It's appreciated that our lives are busy and we have other commitments, so, it would be a great help if we also knew if you are unavailable, that way we get a clearer, and earlier, indication of how we will spread the workload.
