Rotarian Rita O'Brien has undertaken some research and managed to dig up some very interesting history on one of the clubs projects from 1984. The following article from the 1984/85 Club Annual Report has been reproduced for the information of our current members who may not be familiar with the origins of the plaque that was discussed last week. 150th Anniversary Celebrations Committee - "Waterfall Project" by PP Bill Miller At a public meeting called in April 1984 to decide upon a project to commeorate the 150th Anniversary of Victoria in the Borough of Eaglehawk, it was decided that the Eaglehawk Borough Council, Rotary Club of Eaglehawk, and the Y''s Men Club of Eaglehawk would jointly construct a passive recreation area at the lower end of Lake Neangar - later to become known as the 'Waterfall Project'. Funding for the development of this creek site was to be provided: $10,000 from the Victorian 150th Anniversary Committee; $10,-000 from the Borough Council; and $5,000 voluntary labour. The Borough Council further enhanced the area with $3,000 kerb and channel works. This was to become the major project of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk during the 1984/85 Rotary year, with approximately 600 man-hours extended between the first pour of concrete and the completion of the project. Once the Council Engineer's Department had formulated the initial plan and set out the site, the voluntary labour began with the first concrete pour at the end of October. A number of working bees continued till mid February completing the formation of the pools, the pumped reticulating system installed and power connected from new mains. With the project competed, the Council out-door staff were able to mulch the area and with the assistance of several High School students on work experience, planted 300 shrubs and ferns to beautify the area. The project was officially opended on Saturday, 16th March, 1985 in conjunction with the Eaglehawk Dahlia & Arts Festival, by the Chairman of the Victorian 150th Anniversary Committee, Mr. Ranald Macdonald. |
