There was an excellent turnout at last night’s meeting, with seven guests in attendance and only three apologies. Geoff Adcock, Lindsay Walkington and Gary Frank.

Our visitors included Zahrorn Sos, our guest speaker, accompanied by his parents Mary Anne and Osman Sos from New Zealand, as well as Sophie (Zahrorn’s partner) and Mandy Costello, Marg Gallagher, and David Vincent.

Zahrorn provided a comprehensive overview of his work on the “super yacht” M/Y BOLD, where he serves as Chief Officer—the captain's representative responsible for all vessel operations, including safety, security, and medical duties.  His position requires him to manage diverse tasks onboard, ranging from administrative responsibilities and navigation to assisting in the galley during busy dinner services and taking care of the rubbish.

The M/Y BOLD is an 85.3-metre (279-foot) superyacht constructed by Silver Yachts (Western Australia) in 2019, with an estimated value of approximately AUD $159 million. Available for charter, the yacht features extensive amenities for guest entertainment and relaxation, such as a disco, spa, gym, and deck jacuzzi.  It accommodates up to 12 guests in eight cabins—including a master suite, three VIP cabins, and four double cabins—and can host a crew of up to 24 for charters or owner use (including bridge team, deck crew, stewardesses, chefs, engineers, masseuse, dive instructor, nanny, and security personnel).
Onboard equipment includes three jet skis, two sailing dinghies, three tenders for transfers and water sports, kayaks, inflatables, E-foils, a helicopter for tours and transfers, diving and snorkelling gear, and a barbecue facility.

Technical specifications are as follows: two engines provide a total power output of 5,760 kW; three generators each produce 275 kW (with the average household consumption per day in winter being 20–30 kW).  The fuel capacity stands at 180,000 litres of diesel, enabling a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles (9,200 km).  Cruising speed is 12 knots (22 kph), with a maximum speed of 22 knots (40 kph).  The vessel consumes 10,000 litres of fuel daily at cruising speed and 1,000 litres per day for generators, while maximum speed requires 1,200 litres per hour.

Bold spends most of its time in the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas.  Chartering the M/Y BOLD costs approximately AUD $1.5 million per week, or $125,000 per person, exclusive of additional expenses such as fuel, food, and beverages.

Marvellous Miles Feedback
With the rollout of the Marvellous Miles publication into local schools, Kindergartens and childcare facilities now complete, it is apparent that the books have been well received and will meet a need in sharing the valuable knowledge about Epilepsy.  This program has been possible due to the support of a district grant from The Rotary Foundation.

A couple of messages the club have received directly from recipients -

On behalf of the students and staff at Axedale Primary School, I would like to thank you for the donation of the beautiful book Marvellous Miles.  We look forward to sharing this book with students through our Wellbeing Program.
Corrina Hartland, Principal Axedale Primary School

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the kind donation of 'Marvellous Miles' by Sarah Watts.  It is a welcomed addition to our library, and I am sure it will spark conversations in classrooms and at home to raise more awareness of epilepsy.

Club Youth Update
  • RYLA - a call out to all members to help us find an 18-25 year old person who would benefit from attending this week long leadership camp in December.
  • The Science Experience for year 9 & 10 students at RMIT University in Melbourne in January. We can offer this exciting 3 day program to students if members know someone who would benefit. We have not yet had much success with students from ESC.
  • NYSF - 16 Bendigo students have been successful. A parent/student meeting is planned soon. Our cluster is currently working on how Rotary can provide some support. RC of Woodend have kindly offered to assist one Bendigo student also.
  • Marvellous Miles project: all the books have been delivered and Tim reported very positive responses from all the recipients. A super project now completed.
  • Junior Citizen of the Year nomination: no success yet in locating a nominee. Could everyone please give some thought to who we could nominate.
  • Back Packs 4 Vic Kids - again thanks to the Bookshop and Kylie for their contributions.

Rotary Book Shop
A call has gone out for some additional assistance at the book shop.  Current trading days are Wednesday 10am-1pm and Saturday 10am-12noon.  Discussions are also taking place as to the future operating days/hours (including a possible 'Book Fair'), so an idea of who else would be available to assist would be great in the forward planning.  The Rotary book shop is a wonderful example of how Rotary works within the community, and in this case, is leading the way with the recycling of perfectly good books that don't need to be ending up in landfill.

The overflowing stock of books are currently a book lovers delight, so help us to spread the word - come and check out the massive selection of books on offer - you are sure to find what you have been looking for, in fact, you'll also find what you haven't been looking for too!

Here are some of the books recently donated from the book shop to the Backpacks 4 Kids
