February 19th 2025

It was great to welcome our club's guest Ben Hill, a member of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren who has moved into the Bendigo area.  During a chance meeting with Tim Watts it was quickly established their shared Rotary involvement so naturally Ben was quickly invited to come along and join us for the night.  Ben has several years rotary experience, having been President of Rotaract and then moving into the Narre Warren club.  Thanks for joining us Ben, and for your contributions to our club discussion, especially the compliments about our promotional flyer for the Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet - always great to get feedback - especially when it was so positive!  We look forward to your next visit.

A huge thank you to everyone who chipped in and in any way contributed to the success of the catering at the CFA event last weekend.  The clubs finances were boosted by the overwhelming success of our members contributions over the two days - well done team.  And it's always dangerous to single out people, but I'm going to - a huge thank you to Lindsay Walkington who went above and beyond expectations for both days along with Eric Smith who worked tirelessly in the leadup and over the weekend with rostering and support.  And to those members who worked longer shifts - your efforts didn't go unnoticed, thank you.

The CFA were extremely happy and have already booked us for the February event next year.  There has also been an additional request for another weekend but as it is the January long weekend the board indicated on Wednesday night that we should not commit to that extra request.

Eaglehawk's club meeting is moved to Castlemaine on the 5th March for our members to experience the Castlemaine club and to learn about the work they are currently doing in their community.  Confirm numbers with Carmel by the 26th February and she will also be handling the car pooling logistics, so let her know if you can take others with you or if you will be needing a lift.

The wrap up meeting of the Christmas Stocking Raffle Committee (RC Bendigo South & RC Eaglehawk) has now paved the way for the disbursements to be shared between our two clubs.  It was significantly lower than the 2023 raffle, a reflection of how tough it is financially for many in the community at the moment.  Our seven partnering community groups were grateful (and somewhat surprised) to receive the same amount as in 2023 but understand that this arrangement will be revisited going forward.

The Dahlia & Arts procession on the 15th March will feature our club's float - The Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet, whilst also promoting our club to the locals.  Earlier in the day we'll be setting up in Canterbury Park our donuts/drinks stand, it was so popular last year that we have received a special invitation to again participate.

And this week is the 120th birthday of Rotary.

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Worldwide, members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and here at our club we have established Eaglehawk Rotary as a renowned asset within community service.  Happy Birthday Rotary, here's to the next 120 years!

President Alison

A few snippets from our Club's Board meeting held this week -
  • Former Rotarian, Trevor Lock, has accepted the offer of Honorary Membership so arrangements will be made for he and Maree to come along to a meeting for the appropriate presentation
  • A food safety awareness program postponed from December last year will be run after the Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet by Geoff Gallagher
  • Research work is underway to determine the best options available for the refurbishment/replacement of the club's BBQ Trailer
  • The club has taken up the Toy offer from the Rotary Donations In Kind (DIK) and these will be collected this week
  • Additional members views are sought as to the club's involvement in the Student Exchange program (see email from Secretary John)
A sample of the Donations in Kind (DIK) toys that we will be collecting this week.

Weekly Dinner Meeting Attendance

Another slight amendment to ensure we are working with the caterers for the best outcome for the club.  The cutoff for meeting apologies is now 6pm Tuesday (being the day before the club meeting). This change better addresses the timeframes required by the caterer.  It is presumed that all members will be attending the meeting, so if you are actually an apology then contact Carmel prior to 6pm the day before to advise accordingly.  All meals ordered will require payment by the members.

The Rotary Club of Rochester's Songs at the Silos - a free to attend event that would be a shame if you missed - support the local community and enjoy an evening of Opera.
We support the Inner Wheel Club of Bendigo in various ways, they are a community partner in the selling of the Christmas Trailer Raffle Tickets and they meet at our clubrooms on a monthly basis under the 'Rotary Usage' agreement.  The Fashion Parade and 'Delicious' afternoon Tea will be a lot of fun and a great opportunity for our members, friends and families to further support this arm of Rotary.
Our club will  have an entry in the procession along with the Donuts/Drinks stall in Canterbury Park on the day, 15th March 2025
A reminder that the early bird rate of a reduced registration fee, finishes at the end of February.

Celebrating the 20 Year Anniversary of the official opening of the refurbished Mechanics Facility on the 20th February 2005

The Hall provides many opportunities for community use - the recent upgrade of the IT facilities has proven very popular for small scale conferences and professional training by a variety of businesses.
The meeting room continues to be perfect for our club meetings but is also a great area for community groups as again the IT is a huge feature that gives it that extra appeal.
The spacious hall with the adjoining kitchen facility can easily accommodate a wide variety of functions - anniversary's, christenings, baby namings to name just a few.  The available on-site parking is always a huge bonus for group hire.
Rotarian Karen Armstrong has requested club members support as follows -

A few weeks ago, I spoke to you about the possibility to look for billets for when I have a visit from The Melbourne Staff Band.
I have been contacted by the band, and yes, I am looking for anyone who could have a band person stay at their home on the Saturday evening.

I have 18 beds now to find, which there are 3 females in this number.  They will only be at the persons home after the Saturday evening concert, and they will be required to give them breakfast on Sunday morning. And the billet will need to leave by 9am the next morning.

Would it be possible if there could be any Rotarian's who are willing to assist me in this area, please.  I am very happy for you to give out my phone number or they can find me on the club's contact list.

Thank you so much for your amazing support.
Karen's contact number is 0401 402 275.
