November 5th, 2025

It was a more informal gathering this week with 25 people (Rotarians, partners and guests).  Apologies this week were from: Ben Hill, Brian Fitzpatrick, Kylie Rowbottom, Tim Watts, Gary Frank and Jenny Sanderson.

We met at the Eaglehawk Rotary Bookshop in High St Eaglehawk.  It certainly was a chance for people to catch up socially and enjoy some food together.  We also were invited to explore the historical Pharmacy collection (belonging to the O’Brien family), such a privilege.  Amongst many treasures were things like original newspapers, Chemist shop ledgers, pill making equipment and many interesting old storage items.

John Pearce offered his expertise again and Aileen Kirkwood was our guest speaker, recalling her early youth as a true Eaglehawk.  Aileen is a renowned local historian and has been an active contributor to the Eaglehawk community.  Her stories and reflections about changes to Eaglehawk, gave us lots to think about.

Thanks to Rita and family for offering us their property and organising the food.  Our appreciation also to Malcolm and Paul O’Brien for setting up and conducting the tour and to Marg and Lindsay Walkington for many hours of cleaning/dusting the collection.  Well done to Barb and Mandy for the cakes too.

Thanks also to everyone who assisted at the Vegecareian Festival car parking last Sunday. There were lots of attendees.  Again, it gave us a chance to promote Rotary and raise some funds too.

Our partnership with Lightning Reef Primary School has extended to working with the school and conducting the car parking at the school oval for the annual events of:

We wish Gary Frank a speedy recovery - you are missed Gary.

A night at the book shop
Our meeting held at the book shop was an opportunity for members to see and hear about the history of the O'Brien Pharmacy and its evolution into the Eaglehawk Rotary Bookshop.  It's an amazing resource for the community; the variety and quality of the books is really something that has to be seen to be believed.  Many thanks to Lynne for the photography on the night - made the bulletin editors job a lot easier.

Planning is underway for our 2026 Australia Day breakfast and a huge part of that event is the announcement of the Eaglehawk Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year.  Nominations are now open and forms are available to download from the club website at -

If you know someone who has made an enormous contribution to our local community and you feel would be worthy of recognition, then here is your chance.  Jump on-line, download and complete the nomination form, sending it in to us before 1st January 2026.

We are keen to hear from you and to find the next worthy recipient of the Citizen, or Young Citizen of the year for the Eaglehawk Community.

Your help is valued - and needed!
Secretary John has emailed members with reminders as to the upcoming club commitments and our need to fill some rosters.

It's appreciated that our lives are busy and we have other commitments, so, it would be a great help if we also knew if you are unavailable, that way we get a clearer, and earlier, indication of how we will spread the workload.

RYLA alumni staying in touch
Emily has maintained her connections with us as she progresses with her career in pharmacy.  Also, a shout out to Emily's father Tony Mannix - Tony came to the rescue for our club last weekend when we needed extra assistance for the car parking, very much appreciated!
