Our numbers were down a bit this week with apologies from Ben Hill, GP, John Pearce, Mary Preston, Kylie Rowbottom, and Jenny Sanderson.

John Jones was our member behind the badge, and we all learnt a lot about him, from his early childhood, riding a pony to primary school, selling rabbits to a local butcher for 2 bob each, to being amongst the first students from his school to matriculate.  He went on to Teachers College then his first placement at Buckrabanyule where he joined “Young Farmers” and helped organize a Grantley Dee concert.

John was then called up for National Service and was selected for education corps, before being posted to PNG.  On his return home he worked at Corack East PS where he met Marj.  He attended National Service Vocational Training Scheme at Swinburn Institute of Tech where he attained a Diploma of General Studies (Psychology, Asian Studies).  Marj and he were then married and lived in Kew before moving to Stawell where he joined Apex.  Their 3 children were born and John worked at various schools before coming to Bendigo.  John told us of his various activities with work and travelling the world and we as a group thoroughly enjoyed his story, thanks John for sharing that story with us.

Next week we have our District Governor's visit so please make a special effort to attend, following that we have a visit to 'Oscar 1' Mine Rescue.

Co-Presidents
District Governor - Peter Shepheard
Peter's visit to our club this week - the annual event in the diary of the District Governor will be an opportunity for our members to meet with and hear his views on where Rotary is in the world today.

Uniting for Good, the power of collaboration
Acknowledging that our members are our greatest asset and our greatest opportunity to use their skills and connections to increase our impact.
Together we can explore the ability to better to collaborate with each other, with other clubs and other groups to achieve the best outcome.
We don't need to work harder we need to work smarter and unlock the opportunity that collaboration brings.

Peter grew up in a family that volunteered in various ways and with different groups, which led him to volunteer from an early age.  In late 2002, his involvement with the local Basketball Association introduced him to the Rotary Club of Altona, where he pitched for, received, and reported on funding for the establishment of two senior Rep teams.

The President of Altona at the time, Lois Buckingham, invited Peter to join the club.  With his background and familiarity with the members, he accepted the offer.  In May 2003, Peter was formally inducted and has remained a member of Altona, having served as President four times and held nearly every other role.

Peter also took on the position of Assistant Governor four times and has served on various District Committees.  He is notably recognized as the stage manager, known as the 'man in black', for successive District Conferences.

With experience in administration, project management, and customer service, Peter now combines these skills as part of the management team at the historic Queen Victoria Market, where he has been since 2013.
Rotary Book Shop
The club looks forward to welcoming D9800 Governor, Peter Shepheard to the book shop next Wednesday 1st October.  A great opportunity to showcase to District the fantastic community service being provided by Rita, club members and the involvement of community members as well.  Please advise Rita as soon as possible if you will be attending as numbers may be limited and we need an indication for catering purposes.
